VAT Free

If you are registered disabled, you do not have to pay VAT when you purchase disability equipment e.g. Stairlifts, Wheelchair, Scooter etc. Also, VAT is not charged on some services provided to you, including some building work to adapt your home and the hire of disability equipment such as Wheelchairs.
The rules about VAT relief for disabled people are very complex and not everything available to you is at zero rate. VAT law states that you must be “chronically sick or disabled to qualify for VAT relief”. Therefore a person with a broken leg for example would not qualify as this is a temporary disability/injury. An older person who is not disabled would also not qualify.
To qualify for zero rating, a product or service must be supplied for the “personal or domestic use” of a chronically sick or disabled person. Besides the basic essentials such as wheelchairs and vehicles, these include:

  • Gadgets and devices that are designed solely to make everyday tasks easier for disabled people such as kettle tippers for example.
  • Chair or Stair lifts.
  • Computer software or hardware designed specifically for disabled people.
Your supplier will normally be able to advise if you and the product or service qualify, but if in doubt, you can find further information on www.direct.gov.uk under ‘tax relief and reductions’ for those with disabilities or alternatively speak to an advisor at our office.
